The Mind

(or losing it!) (BUT in a nice way!)

"Use all your power to free the senses from attachment and aversion (fear etc) alike, and live in full wisdom of the SELF. That which the world calls day is the night of ignorance to the wise."

The Bhagavad Gita

The mind appears to take control of our life and face it in any direction through fear, desire and attachment. The yogi, through contemplation and meditation understands the true nature of the mind. He sees that it is an illusion that can be destroyed through concentrated effort. By learning to still the mind, he finds Oneness and peace, and learns the true divinity that is fundamental to all life.

The secret to achieving this is to teach your Higher Self what it can do. Remember we mentioned (in "beliefs") that your Higher Self is like a diamond with all It's facets representing each aspect of the universe. In front of it lies the clouded window of your mind, and then in front of that is the "you", the conscious part of you which is represented as a mirror. Your Higher Self, ever silent, sees only what is put in front of it i.e. the mind, and thus It believes Itself to be the experiences of the mind.

In reality, we know that your Higher Self is everything and thus has the power to do anything It wants, but It won't act on that power unless it knows that It can. "You", consciously wishing to experience realisation and understanding of yourself can only achieve that if your Higher Self first cleans the window (the mind) that separates "you" and your Higher Self. But it will only do this when you ask it to. Your conscious self (the "you" that's reading this) however, can also get a bit deluded by what's going on in the mind. So although at times you are sure of yourself and your intentions for realisation, at other times you get mixed up with your day to day lives and lose "yourself" a little. Your goal by cleaning the window is to allow your Higher Self to see Itself in the mirror that is "you". In so doing, the mind sinks into the Self, The Self will recognise It's purity and will understand It's nature, the "you" sinks into IT and "Enlightenment" occurs.

But remember, "you" can't clean the window, you can only get your Higher Self to do it. So how do you go about this? It's like helping a lover who has sand in his/her eyes. You would stand there and help him/her to remove the sand, not walk away!! Even though in truth your Higher Self has full knowledge of everything, it currently has no idea that this is the case. During my own work, I would say to my Self things like "Nicholas, you CAN accept this fear" or "Nicholas, I AM releasing this (fear, anger etc)" or "Nicholas, I CAN let this go" or "Nicholas, You ARE Safe and Comfortable in this body". The way is to give encouragement, to coax, to get It to remove your fears, beliefs and attachments by telling It that It CAN! For although you can tell your Higher Self how important, how special It is, it is up to It to remove the stains on your mind. Each time you ask it to accept a fear, a little more of the window becomes cleaned. And the fun part is, there is now an excuse for you to talk to yourself - to encourage yourself and tell yourself what you need and what is the right thing for you!!

When the window is completely clean, all of It's facets are reflected from the conscious part of you (the mirror) back on Itself. When It sees Itself, it realises that it is Everything and full understanding dawns.

Prayer is something that is really important in this process. I will say this again in other discussion topics. Prayer is asking for help. There is a good reason for the quotation "ask and you shall receive". Especially if you have chosen to remove your negative thoughts, help will always be forthcoming. And the most amazing, beautiful thing is that the further along the path you get, the more you remove, the quicker your prayers are answered. I say quicker because at the beginning of our work, we tend to put up a lot of barriers to us receiving help - the main one being "no one's gonna help me!!" (sound familiar?). Tell yourself "I believe that I WILL receive help" (say it lots!) or "I deserve to Receive help" (say that one lots too!!).

Help is forthcoming from all of those Saints and Mystics and Gurus that have gone before us - Jesus, Mary, Buddha, Sri Ramana Maharshi, St Francis of Assisi, Mohammed, etc. They WILL hear your call and they WILL respond. You can TRUST IN THAT!!
